Our school proudly bears the name of one of the greatest explorers and navigators ever to sail from British shores. James Cook was born in Marton in Cleveland on 27th October 1728. He was christened in the local parish church of Saint Cuthbert, before moving to nearby Ayton in 1736. After serving apprenticeships in Staithes and Whitby he joined The Royal Navy in 1755. His three great voyages of discovery between 1768-1780 literally put the Pacific Ocean on the map.

At our school, we are proud to introduce a new set of core virtues that reflect the fundamental qualities we want to nurture in every child. Developed in collaboration with pupils, parents, and staff, these virtues give all stakeholders a sense of ownership and play a vital role in supporting character development, positive behaviour, and a strong school community. Together, they form our Captain Cook CHARTER, with each letter representing a key virtue: Curiosity, Honesty, Ambition, Resilience, Teamwork, Equity, and Responsibility. To bring these values to life, we focus on a ‘virtue of the week’ through whole school assemblies and class-based discussions, celebrating pupils who demonstrate the virtue through certificates and badges. Alongside this, our carefully designed virtue curriculum maps key learning for each year group, supported by a selection of high-quality reading books in every class to reinforce and embed these important qualities.

School Vision

At the heart of a diverse, respectful and supportive community, Captain Cook Primary School aims to give every child a zest for and love of learning through: an engaging and safe environment that encourages children to be the best they can be academically, physically and socially; experimenting, being creative and developing self-awareness and a stimulating and purposeful curriculum.
