At Captain Cook Primary School, our aim is to provide a high-quality PE curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 that enhances children’s fitness, health, and well-being while fostering an enjoyment of physical activity. Rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2, our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physically demanding activities.
In EYFS, children engage in formal PE lessons once a week, focusing on developing spatial awareness and responding to various stimuli, including stories, rhymes, and music. These lessons encourage children to explore movement, enhance gross motor skills, and build confidence through dance, gymnastics, and games. Beyond structured lessons, EYFS children regularly utilise outdoor climbing apparatus and participate in outdoor activities in our forest area. Additionally, they take part in the Daily Mile activities multiple times a week, where they can walk, jog, or run to complete a circuit, promoting daily physical engagement.
The PE curriculum for KS1 and KS2 follows the Rising Stars scheme of work, aligning with National Curriculum expectations. Each class from Year 1 to Year 6 participates in two hours of physical education weekly. The Rising Stars scheme offers a progressive framework that builds upon prior learning, enabling children to develop confidence and competence across a broad spectrum of physical activities.
In Key Stage 2, pupils have opportunities to participate in a variety of sporting tournaments and events in collaboration with the Middlesbrough Sports Partnership and Middlesbrough School Games. These activities emphasise the six School Games values: Passion, Self-Belief, Respect, Honesty, Determination, and Teamwork. Our inclusive approach ensures that all children can take part in after-school clubs and school-based competitions, fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship. Swimming lessons in Year 4, as well as catch-up sessions offered in Year 6, aim to ensure that all children are safe in water and can swim a minimum of 25 metres. Both KS1 and KS2 pupils engage in the Daily Mile initiative and benefit from outdoor learning opportunities in our forest area, supporting their physical and mental well-being.
Our after-school provision offers a diverse range of activities throughout the year, including cycling proficiency, yoga, golf, multi-sports, futsal, gymnastics, and dance. Many of these activities are subsidised by the school to ensure accessibility for all children, regardless of age, ability, gender, or special educational needs (SEND). This provision aims to develop language skills and vocabulary, foster resilience, leadership, and promote positive mental and physical health.
Our school maintains strong links with the local community, guiding children to join local teams, utilise community facilities, and pursue sporting interests. This network also supports talented pupils in accessing pathways for advanced training and competition. During school holidays, we offer holiday clubs where children can explore a variety of sports and activities, ensuring continued engagement and development outside of term time.
For the past two years, Captain Cook Primary School has been awarded the GOLD School Games Mark, recognising our commitment to inclusivity, participation, and collaboration with local providers.
At Captain Cook Primary School, we are committed to delivering a PE curriculum that nurtures physical confidence, promotes health and well-being, and instils lifelong values. By providing inclusive opportunities and fostering links with the community, we aim to empower all children to achieve their potential and develop a lifelong love for physical activity.
