Intent

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Captain Cook Primary School and beyond. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.
We want children to enjoy and love learning about geography by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.

Implementation

As a school, we have created our own geography curriculum that enables us to provide children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Middlesbrough and beyond. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school.

Through our ‘Living Local: Loving Middlesbrough’ topic, each year group focus on a different part of our surrounding area. This helps the children to develop a real sense of who they are, and gain knowledge about their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special.

Children travel around the world in our ‘The World around Us’ topic. This topic helps children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; formation and use of landscapes. It also enables children to develop geographical skills such as collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping.
